Here is a little Update about what P2 got up to before the Easter holidays:
We continued learning about Our Community and invited local firefighters into school to tell us all about their role in keeping us safe. We learned a lot and even got to try using the hose!
We invited our parents and careers into school to our Reading Collective event. We read ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ 🐛 then played games and did crafts all about the content of the story.
We were happy to welcome some visitors into our classrooms last term. Angela from Changeworks taught us all about recycling and how important it is for our planet, she also took us on a litter pick in our playground to help us take action. Fran from the Seabird Centre taught us all about plastic pollution and ways we, and others, can try to combat it.
We continued our Young Readers project last term by gifting our first book – thank you to the primary 5s for helping us to read and enjoy them!
Primary Engineer – Leadership Award
“If you were an engineer, what would you do?”
We answered this question by thinking of a problem we face in our lives and designing a product which could solve it. We entered our work into Primary Engineer’s competition, there are a few examples below.
Play and Learning
Of course, we learned a lot last term through play and classroom activities too!
We started our new topic ‘Our Community’ in January and we went on some walks around Craigmillar to explore.
We also had a visit from John, a Craigmillar police officer, to explain what his role in our community is.
We also paid a little visit to Jubilee Park one frosty morning.
As part of our reading collective we got to go to the library to see Emily Dodd, the author of ‘Can’t Dance Cameron’. We had a great afternoon learning all about Scottish wildlife and getting to read Emily’s book.
Young Readers Project
We started our Young Readers project this term. We’ve been paired up with primary 5s who have been reading with us and helping us to choose books for the project.
As always, we’ve been doing lots of learning through play too!
We were very busy in Primary 2 before the holidays getting ready for our nativity performance but we also did lots of fun and exciting things that we thought we should show you.
We launched our reading collective and we were so happy to see some of our parents and carers there. We read a lovely story called “The Journey Home from Grandpa’s” and completed activities surrounding it.
In maths, we learnt about place value, we practised building our own numbers using tens and units. We also learnt the names and properties of 3D shapes. Here we are doing some activities to show off what we learnt.
Read, Write, Count
We handed out our Read, Write, Count bags and invited our parents and careers into school to see what fun activities we could do with our new resources.
We worked really hard on our crafts to sell at the Christmas Fair and we were so pleased to make a grand total of £40!
We also wanted to say thank you to the parent council for our lovely gifts, we loved them!
We really enjoyed our Christmas lunch. Thanks again to primary 7 and Mrs Bruce for organising everything, we had a great time!
Christmas Jumper Day
We got to design our own festive t-shirts on Christmas jumper day, here are a few of our designs:
We had our Christmas party on the last week of term, we loved all the dancing and competitions, we even got to meet Santa!
We finished the term by singing “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” and we learnt some Makaton for the chorus too!
We had a fun Science lesson in P2B today. We tried to make magic fireworks with milk, food colouring and fairy liquid.
We filled some trays with milk and popped food colouring in it. Then we dipped cotton buds into fairy liquid and then kept them still in the milk. When our experiment worked, the fairy liquid reacted to the fat in the milk and sent the food colouring shooting across the tray like fireworks. However, the nature of science is that it does not work flawlessly every time so some of our experiments weren’t as effective as others.
Great teamwork from everyone! 🙂
Term 1 in Primary 2 was very busy. We spent a lot of time getting used to our new classrooms and getting to know each other. We were also lucky enough to get out into the community for lots of fun learning opportunities. This is a little update of the things we’ve been doing so far.
Our Trip to Bo’Ness Railway
As part of our transport topic, we visited Bo’Ness Railway where we got to take a trip on a steam train!
Newhailes Bramble Event
We also spent the morning at Newhailes trying out lots of outdoor activities. We got to use paint made from natural ingredients, we got to try bramble jam and play with bubbles!
We had visitors from Save a Life Scotland and St John’s Scotland come and teach us all about CPR and how to administer it.
We had a great time at the Halloween Party this week!
Outdoor Classroom Day
Yesterday was outdoor classroom day. So, p2 spent the morning making their own bubble solution and investigating which bubble wands were most effective.
We also spent time outside completing an Autumn scavenger hunt.
