Craigmillar Castle Junior Tour Guides

Craigmillar Castle Junior Tour Guides 2019-20

IMG_0693

Castleview Primary pupils, are available to take you on a tour of Craigmillar Castle, where Mary Queen of Scots once stayed.  This year is the tenth anniversary of our Junior Tour Guides project, run in partnership with Historic Environment Scotland.

At Castleview, we are committed to the spirit of a Curriculum for Excellence, and the tour encourages our children to share the wonderful rich Scottish heritage of the Craigmillar area. Pupils who have experienced our tour tell us that they learn so much when other children are leading the learning.

Tours take place Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10.00 am, and last approximately 1 hour 15 minutes.

If your class or group would like to receive a free tour by our trained Primary 7 Junior Tour Guides, dressed in period costumes, then please read the information attached below.

To book a tour, please contact Craigmillar Castle in the first instance, to check availability.  You can contact them at craigmillar.vo@hes.scot .

Once you have confirmation that your preferred dates are available at the castle, complete the booking form and email it to the school at admin@castleview.edin.sch.uk.  We will send you a booking confirmation with all the details for your tour.

For health and safety reasons, we do not take tours during the winter months.

In 2019/20 tours will be available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10am, from 20th August 2019 to 8th October 2019, and from 2nd March 2020 to 27th May 2020 (excluding the Easter school holidays).

Tours last approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, and include a 30 minute tour of the castle as well as a 30 minute object handling session in the Education Centre, where our pupils will talk to you about artefacts from the period and answer any questions you may have.

Due to space restrictions in the Education Centre and castle dungeon, we can take a maximum group size of 33 children plus adult helpers.  Classes are split into two groups to do the tour and object handling, they then swap over to give both groups the whole tour experience.  Visiting teachers must have adequate supervision of their class during the tour.

We look forward to seeing you very soon. You will be assured of a warm welcome.

For those unable to visit Craigmillar Castle in person we have provided a short PowerPoint presentation to show you the areas and rooms of the castle that form part of the tour – please get in touch if you would like us to come to you to deliver the virtual tour.   So far we have presented this at local churches, care homes, conferences and The Edinburgh and Scottish Learning Festivals, as well as to the First Minister of Scotland.  Our tour won best in category at The Edinburgh Achievement Awards and was runner up in the Scottish Education Awards.

Please find the booking form below, as well as evaluations, the Primary 6 Craigmillar Heritage Trail Programme of Study, and further information for visiting groups.

Below are some pictures of our tour guides and object handlers in costume.
